Lay Aside Every Weight
January 17, 2021Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2

context:
The preceding chapter (but there were no chapters in the original Greek manuscripts - it's in the form of a letter) talks about the great faith of the Old Testament saints (the "cloud of witnesses"), giving many examples. Read all of Hebrews 11. An important take-away of the chapter is that no one forces us to continue in faithfulness to God, but if we are wise, we'll understand the unfathomable eternal value of our inheritance and how everything in this temporary world pales in comparison. (Also 1John 2:15-17) Chapter 12 continues with that theme, encouraging us to be faithful and to understand the unspeakably great magnitude of the gift we have been given to be children of God. (Also John 1:12-13, Romans 8, 1Cor. 2:9, Jam. 1:12-27, Gal. 5:13-26)
related:
So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. Mark 16:19
The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” Psalms 110:1
Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. Hebrews 8:1-2
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11
Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:10-12
