Once again, we're not doing anyone a favor when we "undo" God's warnings to believers (or unbelievers, for that matter). Even though we're living under the New Covenant (Jer. 31:31-34, Luke 22:19-20, 1Cor. 11:23-26, 2Cor. 3:6, Heb. 8:13, 12:22-29), we don't have the authority to promise people who actually despise God's ways and love those of this fallen world that they're "fine" with God. (1John 2:15-17, Jam. 4:4-10, 2Tim. 2:19-26, 2Cor. 6:14-7:1, Col. 3, Eph. 4-5) No one has ever been saved by the works of the law, but only by faith. (Rom. 4:3-5) However, only GOD has the ability to read hearts and minds to see who truly believes and loves Him (Prov. 17:3, Jer. 17:10, Psa. 26:2, Heb. 4:12-13, Rev. 2:21-23, 1Chron. 29:17, 1Cor. 2:9, Jam. 1:12), but we can look for fruits of the Spirit showing whether a person is indwelt and thus, saved--or not. (John 15:1-21, Gal. 5:13-25) Those who truly believe will obey out of love, respect and gratitude. (John 14:15-26, Mark 12:28-34, Rom. 13:8-10, 11-14, 2Cor. 5:14-15, Jam. 1:25, 2:8, 12) We're instructed to examine ourselves to be sure we do possess saving faith. (2Cor. 13:5, Jam. 2:14-26 - these "works" are those of the Holy Spirit, showing that a person IS saved, not TO save them.)

Telling people that God "doesn't see" sin anymore once we come to believe is wrong. God saw the sin of Ananias and Sapphira, who were believers. (Acts 5:1-11, Rom. 16:18, 1Tim. 6:3) Jesus disciplines His people bodily in this life so that they can escape judgment in the next. (1Cor. 11:32, Rev. 3:19) Jesus SAW the sins and shortcomings of the seven churches when He sent His angel to have John write letters to them. (Rev. 2-3) God FORGIVES us of ANY sin when we repent of it--just like we're supposed to do for others. (1John 1:7-10, Rom. 6, Matt. 18:15-35) We don't need to live in fear of being cast off for slipping, or of having to be perfect "or else." But we should have a healthy respect for God as our Father and REPENT when He disciplines us as His children. (1Pet. 1:14-19, 4:1-5, Rom. 16:18-19, Heb. 12:3-4, 5-11, Rom. 8:13-23, 1John 2:28, 3:1, 10) To love the world (that is the things in it, including sin and also loving anyone or anything more than God) is to harden one's heart against God. (Luke 8:11-15, 12:15, Matt. 18:7-9) THAT is dangerous, because it grieves and quenches the Holy Spirit. (Eph. 4:30, 1Thess. 5:19, Heb. 3:12-15, Rom. 2:1-11) How can someone's faith remain strong if they block out the voice of the Holy Spirit? He's the One who gives the gift of faith (not any rituals we do or any amount of "work" we try to perform of our own power). (Eph. 2:8-10, Rom. 10:17, John 6:63)

Let's be sensible and remember that everything in the world will pass away, but after that comes eternity. Let's choose to use our time wisely, KNOWING and serving our great God instead of wasting our time on worthless pursuits. (Eph. 5:15-17, Col. 4:5-6 - but God doesn't want us dictating to other believers exactly what is valuable to Him - Rom. 14, 2Cor. 4:5.) Let's start with reading our own Bibles instead of being satisfied with a few snippets of Scripture per week and letting someone else tell us what the Bible says according to THEIR understanding of it (and possibly to suit their own agenda, and/or to preserve their livelihood). (1Tim. 1:3-11, 2Tim. 3:1-17, 4:1-4, 2Pet. 2:1-3, Jude 1:3-4)

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:5-13

Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not pay attention.’ Therefore hear, O nations, and know, O congregation, what will happen to them. Hear, O earth; behold, I am bringing disaster upon this people, the fruit of their devices, because they have not paid attention to my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it. Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. Hebrews 3:12-19

Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 1 John 2:1-11

Please note that contrary to what some teachers say, "walking as He walked" does NOT mean keeping the law as He kept it. We are not under the law, which is a good thing, since we could NEVER keep it. (Gal. 3:2-3, 4:9-11, 5:1) That's why we needed Jesus to do so for us. (Matt. 5:17, Col. 2:14-23, Rom. 8) We "walk as He walked" by walking in LOVE. John explains this as he continues in the passage. Paul also explained it in Gal. 5:13-25 and Rom. 13:8-14. Notice those agree with John--it's NOT walking in love if we are sexually immoral, covetous, selfish, corrupt in our language and actions, etc. We're under the law of liberty, and by it we will be judged as to how we used our freedom. (Jam. 1:25, 2:8, 12, Rom. 6:20-23, 1Cor. 6:9-20, 1Thess. 4:1-8, Col. 3, Eph. 4-5)

We ABIDE in Jesus by obeying His commands as He summarized them into TWO (and you can't do the second without the first, so it's really ONE command - LOVE both God and others, even enemies). (Mark 12:28-34, John 13:34-35, 15:8-11, 12-17, Matt. 5:43-48, Luke 6:27-36, Rom. 12:9-21, 1Pet. 4:7-8) God doesn't WANT legalism or robots. He wants to be worshiped and obeyed in TRUTH and SPIRIT. (John 4:23-24, Rom. 7:4-6, Gal. 5:24-25, Rom. 8:13-23) Walking in a manner pleasing to Him does not mean going back to the Old Covenant of regulations, but it does mean we should think about how our behavior, words, actions, inactions, etc. will reflect on our King. (Rom. 12:1-2) We should always remember that we're representing to the world how a child of God behaves. So what kind of statement does that make if we're doing things that God clearly said that He hates and thus are prohibited in ALL ages? (Acts 15:19-20, Rev. 21:8, 22:15)

Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood! Isaiah 10:15

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. Then the word of the LORD came to me: “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the LORD. Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it. Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: ‘Thus says the LORD, Behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. Return, every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds.’ “But they say, ‘That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’ “Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask among the nations, Who has heard the like of this? The virgin Israel has done a very horrible thing. Does the snow of Lebanon leave the crags of Sirion? Do the mountain waters run dry, the cold flowing streams? But my people have forgotten me; they make offerings to false gods; they made them stumble in their ways, in the ancient roads, and to walk into side roads, not the highway, making their land a horror, a thing to be hissed at forever. Everyone who passes by it is horrified and shakes his head. Like the east wind I will scatter them before the enemy. I will show them my back, not my face, in the day of their calamity.” Jeremiah 18:1-17

And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said [to Paul], “Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.” Acts 24:25

And when the governor had nodded to him to speak, Paul replied: “Knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense. You can verify that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem, and they did not find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues or in the city. Neither can they prove to you what they now bring up against me. But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets, having a hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust. So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man. Now after several years I came to bring alms to my nation and to present offerings. While I was doing this, they found me purified in the temple, without any crowd or tumult. But some Jews from Asia—they ought to be here before you and to make an accusation, should they have anything against me. Or else let these men themselves say what wrongdoing they found when I stood before the council, other than this one thing that I cried out while standing among them: ‘It is with respect to the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you this day.’”

But Felix, having a rather accurate knowledge of the Way, put them off, saying, “When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case.” Then he gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody but have some liberty, and that none of his friends should be prevented from attending to his needs. After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, and he sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, “Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.” At the same time he hoped that money would be given him by Paul. So he sent for him often and conversed with him. When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison. Acts 24:10-27

Notice that Felix had a chance to receive the truth into his heart and be saved by hearing the Gospel from Paul, but we can gather from the text that it made him feel uncomfortable. How sad! People come up with many "reasons" to pass up the offer of salvation: holding grudges against God for bad things that have happened to nice people, pride (not wanting to acknowledge His sovereignty and submit to Him - which is to be one's own "god"), thinking there will be time for that later after having more "fun," mixed up priorities (other things are more "important," which is idolatry), not wanting to look "weird" in front of friends who reject Jesus (Mark 8:38) - not wanting to go against the popular trend (Matt. 7:13-29), and so on. How sad! This life is short and everything in it will pass away, but the kingdom of God is forever. If you feel alarmed about the coming judgment, don't be like Felix and put it off. Don't drag your feet. RUN, don't walk, to Jesus!

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:7-15

And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Mark 4:2-9

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. 1 John 2:15-17
